Whisher launch updates after DEMO 2007
Many things have happened since we made Whisher public a few days ago. We’ve had many good reviews and comments, some bad ones, which are probably explained by this, and generally, a lot of attention from the media. We consider our launch a success, as we managed to be on the #8 spot in Technorati searches, and we are having a healthy rhythm of downloads and registered users.
Of course, not everything can be perfect, and we screwed up the forum and blog. Our idea was to provide a seamless integration between the accounts created through the Whisher client, and the login details in the forum and blog, so our users would not have to re-register each time. The backend mechanism worked, but the propagation of the accounts did not, resulting in a lot of confusion, and people not able to login to the forums and comment on our blog. We have now solved this, by setting up a forum and a blog separately from the main site, which you can still access using the links on whisher.com. For now, users will have to register again, while we apply the account propagation mechanism - this should happen early next week.
On the software side, we have received many comments and some bug reports, and we will be changing many things over the next days and weeks - so expect to see frequent updates. For example, the whole login / online / offline / connectivity issues will be merged, so you will not have to login after getting connected, the client will do everything for you with the minimum disturbance. Our development teams will also be very very busy fixing other bugs, and increasing the stability of the client, so stay tuned for news! When a release happens it will be announced on the main site, in this blog and in the forums, plus you may get a warning when you start the client (which can be turned off).
That is all for now, ahead of us we have 20 hours traveling back to Barcelona, after which we will be at full speed again.
Thank you all for your great support, and see you at the LIFT conference in Geneva, and at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona!

I have set up a Whisher node in Barcelona close to Pl. Espanya, where the 3GSM Congress takes place. Hope the node will be helpful
I totally agree with you. Gigaom is in bed with Fon and hence cannot make a honest opinion. This also raises a fundamental question as to the effect of blogs on distorting facts instead of presenting honest opinions. It is a shame.
It was hard to hear a well made review althought almost all were based on others told or suspected facts of the product.
Take care blaming free of cost against Gigaom. They are just giving away what others give for free. The readers, not Gigaom remember, can take it or not.
Talking about your whisher. I don’t see any big difference between having my network not encrypted and having open (when open) with whisher. Let’s say it makes the same. The only difference is that if I left if open and if I think I must use for private and I decide to encrypt it, I am the only who know the password, not a company who I don’t know anything about and can get bankrupt (and don’t tell me almost improbable because you have seen it isn’t)
But I see a great potential in the application, not in terms of internet sharing, but in terms of files and chatting exchanges with our neighbours. And I saw that whisher only works only when internet is enabled.
Greetings and pls stabilize the product is like a boat
LoL
Thanks for your comments - what we thought was odd of Om was to bash Whisher in such a way, and the next day offer the Foneras, certainly not the sort of thing that would point to fairness.
About your views on Whisher - you are free to share, or to not share. If you tag an open WiFi, it will be seen by others on the map, with the welcome message you choose, and if you register an encrypted WiFi, you have full control over all the sharing & promotion features (nickname, welcome message, etc.) We are only distributing keys, so you will always know the key to your own WiFi, it’s not like we are setting the key for you and not telling - that would be silly. You encrypt with whatever method you want (WEP/WPA), then you register the AP, but YOU still have full control, it’s YOUR hardware, not a loan from a company. If we were to close shop, you would still have your WiFi and you could still use Whisher to connect to it.
We are working on stabilizing and fixing bugs, and hope to have a general update by the end of the week.
Regards,
Hi Puchol,
Great job answering all the messages. That makes a difference really. Althought I don’t know until when you are going to be able to do that.
Talking about GigaOM. I must agree that the moment was the worst. That critic makes sense. But to make a whole story about that doesn’t make much sense. Mainly because GigaOm usually doesn’t marry with anybody and with conspiranoia theories also whisher loses. I think.
Well, the value I see then is to have my AP in a map. So I can find other’s hotspots. And the maps works. I don’t know if this is going to happen with thousadns of hotspots. Competitors have done in this way an horrendous job with really really slow maps.
So I must admit whisher in that sense make a difference.
I will tell you what I don’t see clear. Let’s say I see very dark. Yes security concerns. I don’t see why one person with absolute false identity data can connect to my AP. The problem is that the identification parameters are at minimum. I don’t see why that levels couldn’t be upgradaded. If you give your authentic data you won’t probably make any harm to anybody elses’ APs but the opposite I am not so sure.
And to finish I will ask you again if you have plans to make whisher works without internet. I think the market would be bigger with that view of the bussiness.
Thanks for all and I will be waiting the new version.
David: Sorry, but your comment was put in the spam queue by Akismet, thanks for setting that hotspot up!
lOl: I intend to keep answering messages as long as they keep coming and I can cope with them
The maps implementation was tested with 10.000 APs in a city center, and it worked well - took a little to load them all, but it worked.
Regarding your security concerns - if you are that worried about unknown people connecting to your AP, then maybe you are not ready to share. How much trust do you place on the implementation of a router firmware? This has been shown to also have security problems, it’s a basic fact of life. We play the social side here - if you are nice and behave, you will get good ratings (or at least you will not get bad ones). Eventually, we could implement a system that lets you decide what minimum rating must users have to connect to your AP, a bit like the minimum rating some eBay sellers ask for before you can bid. There are ways to set up sharing in a safer way, and we will be posting some guides on how to do it. We are not going to get into an argument with security freaks, so we just say - if you don’t feel comfortable, don’t share, or share in buddies only mode. We are not in favor of asking for too much information, as then we would have the privacy advocates airing the same concerns you are with respect to their personal details. One has to find a balance somewhere.
I am not sure what you mean by ‘works without internet’ - do you mean with an AP that is not connected to the internet? Some functions right now require you to have a internet connection, starting with the login to enable the rest of the features besides connectivity. If you care to elaborate I will try my best shot at giving you an answer.
Regards,
Hi Mike again!
I will be more concrete with my security concerns althought I already know which will be your thinking view.
The case is, if something wrong happens in my AP, can I call to Mike or Ferran and ask who was. Because if I call you and you tell me that the buddy who connected to my AP was Ramses II who lives under the second bridge that won’t be very useful for me and also for the police who will come to ask about.
As you have mentioned before eBay, there you have to give real data and most times verified adress so there is no private concerns, just the fulfillment of the data storage laws.
Ok what I mean to work without internet. Yes what you guessed. Imagine I don’t have Internet connection but I have a wifi router. I just want to share files, chat, also give a welcome message to my neighbours. That’s what I meant.

Mike,
Not got my head araound how your product works. But a simple question - does Wilsher allow you to share the private SSID of La Fonera?
Best wishes for your new venture.
Hi Bizzy,
Yes, of course - our claim is clear, we work with -any- WiFi equipment that is already in place, be it a normal access point, a high-end router, or a Fonera.
To share your private SSID, simply connect to it using Whisher, log into your account, and click the ‘Register this WiFi’ link that you will see below the SSID.
Let me know if you have further doubts, and thanks for your kind words, regards,
Wow, what a great idea to say in the least.
The site is really great, and the application is nice and clean and works out of the box.
Also it’s good how it can connect to any wifi network, meaning i do not have to switch between that and my other one…
Also, when will the Linux version be released? Will it be Ubuntu (which is one of the biggest disto’s) as well as Fedora (Don’t use this myself… but pretty popular..) as I think if you made this for both major distro’s it would be awesome (or even a .bin or something file).
Cheers,
Josh
Hi Josh,
Thanks for your comments - the Linux version will be ready soon, and we will test with major distros, including Ubuntu.
