Whisher 2.0 available for download in two weeks!
August 14, 2007 posted by Mike Puchol
We’ve been pretty busy during the last months, fixing known issues and adjusting the product according to your feedback. Thanks to the support of a bunch of passionate beta testers we’re almost ready to release the next iteration of Whisher, pretty more stable and with promising extended features, some of them probably surprising to you…
For the second half of this year you will hear about us a lot more, now that we feel confident about going massive with Whisher.
Stay tuned because we’re about to create the World’s biggest Wi-Fi network!

I can’t wait to try it out.
“Stay tuned because we’re about to create the World’s biggest Wi-Fi network!” - A very bold comment, a very bold comment indeed
Juan: If we said “Stay tuned, we’re going to create the smallest, most ridicule WiFi network”, what would you think?
As Brooke Philips once said, “Our reach should exceed our grasp, or else, what is heaven for?”. We believe that if other players have been able to make an impact with hardware, we should be able to do way better with a simple software solution. Another good saying: “A thousand mile journey begins with a single step”.
Hope to see you join us!
Yes, but it has been 7 months now, and there is no Whisher AP that I find, never ever. You are going to make a large campain to really get new people, I hope becuase it is needed. If you look at Fon you do not need a special client to connect you simply find a Fon hotspot. But with Whisher I need a client and find nothing! You understand me?
First of all, making your comments anonymous makes them almost worthless, as they look like pro-Fon Whisher bashing…anyway, where can -you- find a fon hotspot other than your own? Francofon’s stats show the best country has 50% of active routers, going to 20% in other countries.
7 months, yes, but of concentrating on improving Whisher, actually listening to our community, and using its feedback to make things better - instead of publishing bullshit statistics and empty ‘partnerships’.
BTW, with Fon, you -do- need something special to connect, a customized $50 router. Whisher works with all existing WiFi, so the potential right off the bat is huge in comparison.
Dear Juan,
We have something very special for you, proud Fonero, on our 2.0 release which is on track to be made available next week.
And please forgive Mike’s modesty, Whisher is already making an impact, this things seems to work man, sorry for that.
I said that I do not need a special client to connect to the Fon network. You did not read what I stated obviously. If the kind people who choose to power up their La Foneras and give signal choose to pay money for the hardware that is their choice.
I do not own a fonera, I only pay and connect when I find one.
Whishers idea is not bad in theory.
Lets really see if “Version 2.0″ can attempt to make an impact.
Sorry Ferran, you say it all ready has made impact, but there is nothing I see on the internet, your “community” or maps to say that your comment is true.
Mike -BTW- When I with hold back my cell phone number if making a call it is for reasons. Many people choose this too, likewise I do not go giving out my email address e.t.c randomly. So do not say by remaining “anonymous” my comments are worthless as you only make yourself look like you can not accept critical thoughts. Also your company “blog” is the place for swear words? It does not create such a good impression
I am sure you will either do one of two things now:
A) Not publish this
B) Edit it
Juan,
I did read what you said, but you are wrong - you either need a $50 router to connect for “free” to others, or you need to pay $3 per day. With Whisher you do not need any of these things.
On the anonymous topic - you are free to post like that if you want, but you have to realize that you could very well be a competitor’s employee specifically tasked with throwing crap on our blog. Your email is not published on the comments, in case you didn’t know. I can accept critical thoughts, but when they come from someone unknown, and with doubtful thinking behind, you have to understand that I take it with a pinch of salt. You basically bash Whisher, and say the other guy is great. Please provide substantial evidence to attest both facts.
And for the record, I did neither A nor B, it is published in full. We do not censor criticism on our blog, unlike others do ruthlessly. If you go to my blog you will see I never censored any bad criticisms, even some which were really hard and personal attacks.
For once you could comment on the arguments I am giving you, but you seem to ignore them at your own convenience. Number of online routers they have? Censorship on blogs and forum? Support quality? Heat issues?
….?
Didn’t think so.
Juan, when I have a look to the downloads and to the coverage maps, I do really think we’ve made an impact. I accept though that this is not enough, that’s why we keep working hard.
In any case don’t forget that what we’re pursuing is a really big thing, so it won’t take a few days or weeks, but years. I’m just concerned about the end result, so you can keep comparing us to Fon or whoever, we’re not onto this. If you think they are better, then fine, that doesn’t affect us. We just react when the arguments are biased, which happens to be your case.
I dont think Juans comments are that far off the mark, I dont want to have to install some software on my computer just to find that there is no coverage!
I think they are actually far off the mark - you do *not* need to install Whisher to check the coverage, that is why we provide the online maps. Simply search for the area you are interested in, and see if there are any signals nearby.
In any case, the chicken-and-egg problem -always- happens, even to the three-letter-company. They started with one router somewhere, and I bet that guy was not as negative as you. For the record we have a lot more than one router
Me neither, that’s why we want all Windows, Mac and Linux computers come with WHISHER pre-installed :-).
Seriously, I get your point and somehow agree. In this game either you go for a pure software approach where you then have to force visitors to use your application, which is our case, or you provide new hardware and let anyone with a browser connect, after paying of course.
We prefer our solution because it can spread virally (it’s a free piece of software), it is economically more efficient (fine if you want to become the next Linksys) and eco-friendly (why to add even more signals to the crowded spectrum…).
At least you can try our solution without having to pay, don’t tell me that’s not nice!
Mike: I think he mean coverage as in the Whisher sharing users is TINY. If you have many people looking at Whisher its value is zero (to that user) if they can not find AP to connect to. If 90% (But I bet more) then never run Whisher again it is doubtfull they will return to try Whisher another time.
Ferran: Yes, Whisher could spread like a virus
what happened with your site?
#Juan: The argument over user adoption for *any* 6-month-since-launch enterprise is stupid. You simply cannot judge us (or anyone) based on growth figures or coverage in such a short time, and I repeat (but you seem to ignore what I say) with *no* noise or media presence after the launch. We concentrated on the product. You can continue with your argument if you want, but unless you answer for once my points, it is just invalid.
#a: We’re in the process of finishing the new website, and it seems one of the old site’s directories was not setup with the right permissions…anyway, it’s fixed now, thanks for letting us know.
Just a quick note:
GOOD - Yes, i’m getting pretty excited about the new release and I really hope I can try it out as soon as possible. I’ve been a Whisher user since almost the beginning and I’m ready to help spread the world if the new client is really as good as you’re saying
BAD - The reason Twitter has a text size limit is because it’s meant for quick notes, you shouldn’t split a single message in 5 different posts. I know it’s not an official rule, I just don’t find it very polite. The blog is built for long messages, Twitter is not :/
