Beta testers wanted! - get free WiFi in exchange

February 29, 2008 posted by Ferran Moreno

We need beta testers for our Windows XP and Mac WiFi plugins. We will give away WiFi Out credit, so that you can connect for free at thousands of commercial hotspots all around the world, including the best hotel chains, airports, coffee shops and so on. We are literally everywhere, thanks to our roaming agreements with operators like Swisscom, BT Openzone, AT&T, Wayport, and many more.

Please take a look at our coverage maps, and if you’re ready to check how easy it is to connect to those hotspots around you, just send us an email at info at whisher dot com.

WiFi Out is like Skype Out, but instead of voice minutes it gives you WiFi access minutes. It works as a plugin, which embeds nicely into your operating system, and allows automatic access to both commercial hotspots and shared hotspots (those contributed by the people).

We look forward to giving you truly free WiFi!

Great idea, how do we offer WI-FI to wisher members?

let me know if you are still looking for people to help test your plugin.
I assume it is proprietary and the source code is not available?
do you have any plans on releasing a linux version soon, if so will it be open source?

Faronhof:
We noticed that you are already offering free WiFi at your location. So if you want to include the Whisher community, you can register your Hospots using the application. Your hotspot will then be shown on our maps. And Whisher users will see it as a Whisher shared hotspot.

Marcus:
If you want to help us in the testing, please send us an email to info@whisher.com and we will send you further instructions. We are always happy to have more people looking for bugs and improvements.
Whisher is a closed application as we need to protect the WEP/WPA data of the Whisher community. We have however APIs that enable programmers to build application integrating Whisher.
There will not be a Linux version, at least in the near future, as there are certain implications in the handling of WiFi adapters which complicate how Whisher must do things.

Hello,I hane Vista Home Premium and I am interested in doing the beta testing.BUT, I am concerned about adware, spyware in the program and what type of security would the wifi network have?

Sd, we don’t have a Vista version yet, but when we do, we will post on our blog. Then, just get the application, create yourself an account, and email us to get a free WiFi voucher. Security is better than on most networks, but you should still follow best practices for your protection, such as keeping an up-to-date antivirus and firewall software, and making sure any sites you visit where financial information is exchanged are encrypted, etc.

I’m interested in your service, but need a bit more info. I run an office from home with a wireless router and an access point. How do I stop people getting access to my network? Can I run the access point only for internet access. I have a 30dbi yagi antenna attached to the access point to allow me access in the surrounding areas to my house. I would be interested in making this commercially available. Also, can you restrict bandwidth to individual users i.e. stop torrent downloads etc.

Would also be interested in trying out the free minutes as we have a couple of hotspots nearby. (Coleraine, Northern Ireland).

Many thanks,
Mark.
